This “LEMON & HERB” rated reef is another of the five dive sites where, if you’re lucky, you might see whale sharks on scuba!

Resembling a volcano crater you swim into the 'crater' to enjoy the life supported by the colourful hard and soft Corals all around you, 360 degree T.V. at its best. Eels, Lobster, Cuttle Fish, Octopus, shoals of reef fish and Nudibranch are among the channels available.

Krakatoa is an inshore reef resembling a “caldera” – or sunken volcano crater. The crater is, on average, 2-4m lower than the surrounding rock which creates a wall around the site. Speckled around the inside ledges are pinnacles that support tropical coral life, typical of Tofo’s inshore reefs. These surfaces are covered in brightly coloured soft and hard corals which give a home to the abundance of “macro” sea life.

Krakatoa boasts hard and soft corals as well as an abundance of reef and game fish. The centre of the crater is dominated by a number of rocky outcrops in the sand, offering slow winding dives with a couple of swim-throughs. If this isn’t enough, if bottom time allows you can also look for stonefish and harlequin fish at the small indent adjacent to the large crater.

Highlights

The deepest areas on the sand are around 16m with the top of the reef between 10m and 12m. Huge spiny Lobsters hide under small overhangs and in crevices, along with all types of Moray Eel and sometimes Octopus. Spanish Dancers and Egg and Tiger Cowrie shells can be seen clinging to the rock faces and this is an excellent site of Nudibranches.

The reef has a thriving presence of Bluespotted and Shovelnose Rays, sometimes an Eagle Ray or and large shoals of schooling fish including Yellow Snapper, Pickhandle Barracuda, Bigeyes, Humpback Snapper and so on.

This dive also offers one of the best chances to see and snorkel with Whale Tip Reef Sharks on the journey to and from the dive site as it lies at the far end of the Ocean Safari zone (Spotted all year round but best sightings November to March).

Although there can be some surge, this is a lovely reef for photographers and newly certified divers because of the long bottom time.

Double dives

2 x single dives on the same launch including a light lunch of a sandwich, fruit, local biscuits, tea & coffee, water and the deal breaker lollipop! We also spend around 1 – 1 ½ hours on our surface interval searching for the big 5 of Tofo to snorkel with Whale Sharks, Manta, Dolphins, Turtle and (in season) Humpback Whales
