The Klein Karoo has one of the world’s richest and most diverse succulent habitats, with over five thousand species recorded, representing almost 50% of succulent species globally. These unusual and unique plants are easily accessible in the Klein Karoo.
The Klein Karoo is a transition zone between the Fynbos Biome and the Succulent Karoo Biome prevalent in the area. It is not unusual to encounter both fynbos and succulent plants growing naturally together.
The Klein Karoo is rich in culture, with well-established communities that can trace their ancestry back through the centuries. The towns and villages have many historic buildings dating to two hundred years ago.
The diversity of the landscapes, with rugged mountains always in view, rolling hills and valleys, make the Klein Karoo an endless source of delight and wonderment.
Despite being the most developed part of the Karoo, there remains a sense of space and solitude across most of the region.
In staying with us, you become co-authors of this living tapestry. Thank you for joining us on our incredible journey.
Our Safari Guide will share their deep understanding of this unique area and impart their knowledge of the symbiotic relationships that exist between the fauna and flora of the Klein Karoo.
Game drives are conducted twice a day depending on the season, just after sunrise as the sun slowly starts to light up the trees and the mountain and then again as the sun dips on the horizon before sunset.
Each game drive brings a new experience and opportunity as the rangers traverse the roads through the bush, valleys and mountains of the Klien Karoo looking for the elusive leopard as your ranger reads the signs and tracks. Visit ancient riverbeds as they wind through a fringe of Acacia trees lining a wooded wonderland in the shadow of the giant cliffs of the Langeberg mountain range.
Sunsets in the Karoo don’t just signal the end of a day. They are an event that should be witnessed. The sun and sky collude in perfect harmony, throwing a veil of colour over the horizon.
These palettes of God produce colours and hues that continue to elude the artist’s brush and photographer’s lens. Appreciate the full glory of a Karoo sunset with a gin and tonic in your hand and awe in your heart. Be prepared for the unexpected arrival of a gentle chill as the sun sets and darkness envelops everything, reducing it to shadows
Game drives are conducted on Toyota Land Cruisers with open sides and raised seats for optimum wildlife viewing. You can book a private game drive vehicle with a ranger. This enables you to dictate the pace of your safari experience, tailored to your specific wish list of wildlife you hope to see. Bear in mind every game drive is an opportunity, not a promise, to see as many species as possible. Our rangers are familiar with the land and the animals and their behaviour. They will do their utmost to find the wildlife you request. A private game drive vehicle is a requirement for families with young children.
