The city of Masvingo is a quiet charming urban centre in the heart of Zimbabwe. It is home to the historical monument the Great Zimbabwe Ruins; one of UNESCO's Cultural World Heritage sites. Close to the Ruins lies the award-winning Ancient City Lodge. Guests will find that this luxury lodge was carefully designed and elaborately decorated, to reflect exceptional ethnic characteristics and to mirror the artistry reminiscent of the Masvingo ruins.

Ancient City Lodge is very unique as it is expertly incorporated in the natural beauty of a granite outcrop, and the surrounding grove of Msasa trees. The entire complex's architecture is eco-friendly and it has sweeping views of Great Zimbabwe ruins in the distance and the shining waters of Lake Mutirikwi.

The Lodge at the Ancient City is a unique hotel built around a granite outcrop in the same style as Great Zimbabwe, providing stunning views across the valley of Msasa towards the ancient city of Great Zimbabwe. The Lodge integrates seamlessly with the surrounding trees and boulders of the site with dry stonewalling and soaring thatch structures.

The impressive stone and thatch lounge is set high upon a granite outcrop with huge boulders forming the main part of the overall architecture. Mealtimes may vary depending on the game drives and the season but usually are a set time. All meals at the lodge are table d’hôte with a broad selection of dishes and are served in the thatched dining hall or open-air summerhouse, depending on the season.

Come and take a Sundowner on the sundeck or in the spectacular bar area while traditional mbira music entertains you during an atmospheric dinner under the impressive thatch roof of the restaurant.

Activities to Do

The Lodge at the Ancient City can provide historical guides to take guests on detailed trips through the ancient capital of Zimbabwe. The beginnings, architecture, trading routes, social, religious practices and the reasons for the decline of the region are all discussed. Also available, drive and walks around the nearby lake Mutirikwi, recreational park and into adjacent tribal areas are also available. Guests can also book trips to see some of the local wildlife including white rhinoceros, hippo, crocodile and various antelope and bird species.
